The D.C. Tenants’ Rights Center seeks a part-time Intake Coordinator to join our “low bono” law practice. DCTRC is not a typical law firm: we are constantly trying to find ways to reduce our fees while providing efficient, useful services to D.C. tenants. We’re the only private firm in D.C. that works exclusively with tenants. We represent tenants in court, but we also advise tenants on how to avoid court. Typical issues include housing code violations, failure to return security deposits, lease terminations, evictions, and illegal rent increases. We also help tenants facing housing discrimination, and we assist tenant associations asserting their building-purchase rights.

Compensation: $20 per hour for roughly 20 hours per week to start. We also offer health insurance and generous paid time off.

Responsibilities:

● Conduct intake both by phone and online

● Serve as a key point of contact for our clients

● Manage attorney calendars for scheduling and monitoring of case deadlines

● Oversee weekly billing and communicate with clients about payment

● Keep the office stocked and organized

● Strengthen our administrative systems, technology, and communications, all of which are fundamental to our work

Qualifications:

● Experience working in an office setting, with a preference for legal office or social justice organization experience

● Able to start ASAP and work in our D.C. office

● Maintain professional and courteous customer service, including in difficult situations

● Demonstrated ability to multitask and meet deadlines, strong organizational skills and attention to detail

● Willingness to take initiative to improve business efficiency

● Interest in social justice and client-empowering advocacy

It’s a bonus if you have:

● Some experience with or interest in computer programming

● Media literacy and marketing experience (social media, website management)

● Spanish or Amharic proficiency

● Experience or interest in small business operations and growing a business

Company Culture: We are a group of attorneys, an Operations & Program Assistant, and an Intake Coordinator, who try to have effective and compassionate relationships with our clients. The Intake Coordinator plays an important role on our team, and there are opportunities to expand the scope of work based on the interests of the person who fills this role. Our firm is devoted to providing a healthy work/life balance. If hired, we would ask that the Intake Coordinator commit to working with us for at least 1 year.

We value a diverse and inclusive working environment and welcome applications from candidates who identify with any race, religion, gender, national origin, political group, veteran status, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, marital or family status, or any other legally protected status, and from candidates of any age, with any physical or mental disability, and regardless of personal appearance.

How to apply: Email a cover letter and resume to employment[at]dctenants.com. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. In your cover letter, please indicate when you are available to start.
